Carl was commissioned by Phillip Hamilton to design a roofed pergola at his home by the sea in Kakanui, Otago. The pergola had to blend into its surroundings of shrub plantings, a greywacke pebble beach and an adjacent pond. Carl designed the pergola around two curved gabions filled with larger greywacke stones that seamlessly emerge out of the existing pebbles. Curves were designed into the ends of the raised deck and the roof was tilted to block harsh summer sun while allowing in winter sun. A fun-filled official opening was held with wine, canopes’ and the cutting of a red ribbon. A memorable project indeed.
